Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
